Bobbie Blankenship stood in front of her old Sears oven, circa 1969, staring at her copper teapot, Claudia’s old letters in hand. She was about to find out if the steaming trick she’d seen in movies really worked. When the teapot whistled, Bobbie opened the lid, held one of the letters over it, and, voilà, with a touch of a little Bobbie finesse at the edges, the letter seal opened.

Gingerly, she laid it on the genuine Formica top of her early 1950s chrome kitchen table, nudged the flap back, and pulled the letter free. The story she saw unfolding there on the Formica made her heart pound and ache at the same time, her eyes returning to the same passages, the same words:
